MICRO OIL SKIMMER 

 

The Micro Oil Skimmer is a floating weir skimmer with a self-adjusting head and adjustable floats.

 

As the applications for the Micro Oil Skimmer are extremely varied we are unable to cover every situation that may occur, however we have prepared 

the following as a guide and hope this will help you make the best use the Micro Oil Skimmer.

Contact with strong solvents such as acetone should be avoided as these may dissolve the material from which the skimmer is constructed.

 

As the skimmer is made of plastic it is not well suited for use in hot water, however this should not be a problem up to temperatures of about 55ºC.

 It would be an advantage in this situation to drill a very small hole in the top of the floats to allow for the expansion of air inside, as the expanded 

air may cause the floats to burst.

 

The side of a standard skimmer is fitted with a 32mm BSP (or as ordered) male fitting. 

The Micro Oil Skimmer is a very light unit, therefore using stiff and heavy hoses directly onto this fitting may cause the unit not to sit properly in the

 water, detracting from its performance. To overcome this problem a rigid arm has been developed that connects to the skimmer, holds it in place, 

absorbs the shocks from the pump and is capable of a allowing it to move freely up and down with the water level.

As the Micro Oil Skimmer is not a very large skimmer we have encountered situations where the uptake of water from existing pumps is too large 

and air is sucked into the system. This leads to increased emulsification of the oil and is of course not desirable.

To overcome this, first tries to put the central part of the unit as deep as the adjustment of the floats will allow. Each float is attached to the central

body with a stainless steel bolt this can be loosened and then the position of the float can be changed.

If this does not fix the problem it may be necessary to drill a hole in the bottom of the outlet pipe there-by allowing more water to reach the pump 

and taking the pressure away from the self-adjusting head. (We manufacture Micro Oil Skimmers with this modification that allows adjustment for

 varying amounts of water when required.)

Capacity:            The Micro Surface Skimmer has been
tested using 1,000 to 4,000-liter/hr positive displacement pumps.

                            Their steady intake of liquid is ideal for use with floating weir skimmers.

 

The Micro Oil Skimmer works well using double
diaphragm pumps with capacities of up to 6,000 litres per hour.

 

The Micro Oil Skimmer works well using a small aquarium pump or by using gravity by way of syphoning in which case no pump 

is needed at all.

 

The Micro Oil Skimmer has given good performance on floating
materials ranging from sawdust, cement scum, floating vegetable materials, oils
ranging in viscosity from aviation gas through motor oil and gear oil, it has been utilized in the pre-treatment of 

kitchen wash water in commercial situation
s where oils and solidified fats need to be removed from
the
water prior to disposal.

DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES

Luran S is an efficient dielectric, as is evidenced by the figures for the volume and surface resistivity, the

dielectric strength, the resistance to tracking, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor.

The main application for Luran S in electrical engineering is protective insulation, e.g. housings and covers.

In telecommunications, it is used for housings and covers and also as true insulation.

An advantage of Luran S articles is that they pick up hardly any dust at average humidity's during

manufacture, storage and use. The extremely favourable antistatic properties of Luran S are evident from

Fig 1, which shows the results of subjecting Luran S surfaces to a corona discharge. Within a very short

period, viz. 54-87 seconds, the charge on the Luran S drops to half of the initial value. The remaining

charge then disappears within a few minutes.

RESISTANCE TO CHEMICALS

At room temperature. Luran S is resistant to saturated hydrocarbons, low-aromatic gasoline and lube oil.

vegetable and animal oils, water, aqueous solutions of salts, and dilute acids and alkalis.

It is attacked by concentrated inorganic acids, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters, others and

ketones.

An idea of the resistance to any medium can be obtained by immersion tests and the determination of any

attendant gain or loss in weight.

The action of a medium on a moulding is greatly influenced by the duration of exposure and the

temperature. As a rule, it becomes more pronounced if the Luran S article is subjected to external or internal

stresses.

Another point to consider is that the resistance may be affected by the impurities that are present in varying amounts in chemicals of technical purity.

In view of the manifold parameters that may arise, laboratory studies can yield no more than a guide, and

physical tests on the mouldings.

Luran S has even better resistance to environmental stress cracking than Terluran, because the constituent acrylic rubber

is superior to the polybutadiene in ABS types.

Luran S mouldings do not require any particular care. Any scratches can be removed with most commercial polishes for paints, leather and wood. Dirty articles can be cleaned with detergents or soap and water.

PERMEABILITY TO GASES AND WATER VAPOUR

The Luran S resins are impermeable to water, but gases and water vapour may diffuse through Luran S

sheet to an extent depending on the pressure difference. Details are given in Table 1.

The permeability to gases also depends on the conditions under which the film or mouldings were produced.

Applications/Industries

  • Emergency spill recovery - Can be used in open waters such as lakes, rivers and harbours . The oil skimmer is often used for emergency oil spill cleanups and general oil spills.
  • Widely used to remove floating oil, fats or other material from tanks, sumps and pits.
  • The skimmer is designed to remove free-floating oils fats, grease and other material from the surface of water in indoor and outdoor applications. Typical applications include oil/water equalisation tanks, oil/water separators, settling and cooling ponds and hundreds of other applications.
  • Food processing industry - removal/skimming of animal fats and grease or vegetable oils from a plant's wastewater stream
  • Parking Lots & Garages - removal of oil and other floating liquids due to leaks or spills. Normally all water, oil, fuels etc. from petrol station driveways wash down into some form of pit. This mixture must be separated and the waste oil/petrol that the skimmer collects is pumped out and disposed of. The remaining water is treated and put into the sewer mains.
  • Sewer Treatment Plants - Can be used in different stages of sewer treatment.
  • Storm water run-off sumps and pits - Will remove floating oils/contaminants from storm water run-off before it enters into river systems or oceans.
  • Manufacturing plants - Most manufacturing or processing facilities have circulating water systems. The water collects in a holding tank or sump. Removing floating waste liquids with little water content can reduce the cost of disposal.
  • Outdoor Ponds, Lakes, Basins, Etc. - Where floating oils are present, skimmers provide inexpensive and effective removal, solving a serious environmental problem.
  • Transportation - The application exists in the wash down waste water sumps. After transportation vehicles are washed out, the water travels to a collection sump. The micro oil skimmer can be placed in the sump to remove all detergents, oils and any other floating contaminant that may have been inside the transportation vehicle.
  • Steel industry - Several stages may include cooling tanks that require removal of contaminants.
  • Petrochemical industry - The Micro Oil Skimmer has several applications in petrochemical/refinery plants. Applications include storage tanks, cooling ponds and waste water tanks just to name a few.
