SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES
LSM SPILL CONTROL BIO-HAZARD CLEAN-UP
These spill clean-up procedures are provided in the absence of, however definitely do not replace, any current workplace procedures and policies.
Fast acting LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up must be applied in conjunction with the proper Spill Kit Response equipment. This equipment will vary widely depending on the nature of the spill and may only require disposable gloves, broom and dust pan (e.g. soft drink, ice cream) but can also include the following Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and accessories (nitrile gloves or disposable gloves, safety glasses or splash goggles, respirator, broom and pan, scoop, disposal bags, bag ties and waste labels, possibly colour-coded). Only individuals with formal spill contents identification and clean-up training are qualified to determine the correct PPE and other spill response equipment. Do not atempt to clean-up any spill unless you can identify it and are trained in the right clean-up Safe Work Procedures. The workplace should contain a designated area with Safety Equipment.
(Note: DO NOT use LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up on Hazardous Materials (aggressive/corrosive liquids such as strong acids, strong alkaline/caustic solutions, solvents, formaldehyde, pesticides, herbicides, and halogens). Instead consult the easy to identify, Spill control LSM range of innovative, environmentally concerned sorbent products that are especially formulated for the containment, neutralisation, clean-up and disposal of specific Hazardous spills.
Incompatibilities: Hydrofluoric acid, strong alkali solutions. Avoid contact with materials that support combustion, such as strong oxidising agents.
1. Common Consumer Spills – Liquids, Semi Liquids and Viscous
Spills. Preventative Maintenance of non-aggressive liquids.
These spills may include, but not exclusively, the following Liquids and ‘Semi-Solids’:
Low Viscosity: Soft Drinks, Wine, Beer, Milk, Juices, Detergents, Cooking Oil
Medium Viscosity: Sauces, Cream, Yoghurt, Ice Cream, Pickles
High Viscosity: Jam, Honey, Peanut Butter, Margarine, Eggs
Spill Procedures:
a. Do not attempt to clean-up spill unless formerly trained.
b. Isolate spill and erect appropriate warning signs and/or barracades. Control access to area. Prevent people from walking through affected area.
c. Identify the type of spill to determine the cleaning procedure.
d. Identify if the spill is contaminated with glass or the spill is of a hazardous nature.
e. Put on disposable gloves and other appropriate Personel Protective Equiptment (PPE); do not handle fluid or absorbed material.
f. Liberally apply LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up around the perimeter of the spill and then work it toward the centre. Continue to apply until there is no free liquid or liquid migration. Take care not to create aerosols.
g. Using a suitable broom or scraper work LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up into the spill by pushing loose absorbent in downward motion. Start moving LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up back from the outside to the centre. If liquid can be seen move absorbent back over the liquid and work in further.
h. Repeat the previous procedure until the spill comes away from the surface bound within the absorbent. More viscous spills may require more vigorous action.
i. Sweep or scrape absorbed LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up into a suitable scoop or dustpan. Place all absorbed waste into a suitably identified bag/container. Use a thick walled, puncture proof plastic bag or leak proof cardboard box if broken glass or other sharp objects are present in spill area. Seal bag. Dispose with the normal, non-hazardous consumer waste stream.
j. Replace lid to LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up and return to it proper storage area.
k. Clean brush, scraper and scoop properly to prevent cross contamination. Remove disposable gloves and place in normal consumer waste stream.
l. Wash your hands with soap and water.
2. Biological Spills
These may include but not exclusively:
Vomit, Blood, Urine, Faeces, Rotten food matter
Personal Contamination: If a spilled material has contacted any part of your body, start first aid measures immediately. Move directly to the nearest eyewash or safety shower. Disrobe promptly if clothing is involved. Flush for a minimum of 30 minutes whether eyes or skin are involved. Other persons should assist (you will need help with eye flushing) and seek medical advice as soon as possible.
The spill should be cleaned-up only by a person who has had formal training and, if the spilled material is of low hazard and, if the spill is a litre in volume or less. Review material safety data sheets when appropriate and use the following guidelines.
First, you must decide on whether to evacuate the immediate area of the spill. Make a determination on whether a clean-up can be handled or if assistance is required. Anytime you are unsure about handling the spill yourself, be safe and evacuate the area. Contact emergency response authorities.
Spill Procedures: Small Spills (less than 1 litre) of Biological Spills/Waste
a. Do not attempt to clean-up spill unless formerly trained.
b. Identify the type of spill to determine the correct cleaning procedure. If unsure, call authorities: Site Safety Officer, fire brigade or police.
c. Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, gown/apron, protective eyewear, and facemask. Do not handle spill fluid or absorbed material.
d. Control access to area. Prevent people from walking through affected area and thereby tracking the potentially infectious material to other areas. Isolate spill and erect appropriate warning signs and/or barracades. Cordon off spill area with caution tape if present in spill kit.
e. Contact a specially trained foreperson for assistance, if needed.
f. Obtain the LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up needed to absorb and disinfect spill.
g. Liberally apply LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up around the perimeter of the spill and then work it toward the centre. Continue to apply until there is no free liquid or liquid migration. Take care not to create aerosols.
h. Using a suitable scoop/scraper or broom and pan, work LSM 75 into the spill before sweeping into pan/scoop. Take care not to create aerosols.
i. If liquid remains apply more LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up absorbent until the surface can be swept/scraped clean.
j. Place all absorbed waste and contaminated outer gloves into a suitably identified biohazard bag/container. Use a thick walled, puncture proof plastic bag or leak proof cardboard box if broken glass or other sharp objects are present in spill area. Do not seal bag.
k. Apply appropriate disinfectant. To avoid creating aerosols, never spray disinfectant directly into spilled material. Instead gently flood affected area first around the perimeter of the spill, and then work disinfectant slowly into spilled material. Allow a least one minute of contact time with disinfectant.
l. Apply a thin layer of LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up absorbent over disinfected surface and sweep clean and dry. Place absorbed material into biohazard disposal bag. Do not seal bag.
m. Sterilise brush and pan with disinfectant or otherwise place in disposal bag. If gloves or any other PPE, or spill control equipment has contacted spill, either sterilise or place in disposal bag, seal and label.
n. Dispose of waste in accordance with federal, state and local regulations. Assure conformity with all applicable regulations. When used to absorb hazardous substance(s) treat as per that/those substance(s). Refer to waste management authority for disposal regulations for biological waste or pickup advice.
o. Wash your hands with soap and water.
Personal Contamination
a. Remove any contaminated clothing or protective equipment.
b. If skin has been contaminated, wash with soap, disinfectant and warm water.
c. If eyes have been splashed, rinse under running water (eyewash or faucet) for at least 15 minutes.
d. Contact Doctor, hospital or ambulance if medical attention is needed.
3. Hydrocarbon Spills
These may include but not exclusively:
Petrol, Diesel, Oil, Other Engine Fluids, Grease
Spill Procedures:
a. Do not attempt to clean-up spill unless formerly trained
b. Identify the type of hydrocarbon spill to determine the correct cleaning procedure. If unsure, call authorities: Site Safety Officer, fire brigade or police. If necessary turn-off any ingition sources.
c. Isolate spill and erect appropriate warning signs and/or barracades. Control access to area. Prevent people from walking through affected area.
d. Use proper Personel Protective Equiptment (PPE) and be aware hazardous nature of the spill.
e. If safe to do so, right any uprighted containers where the spill originated, do not handle fluid even with nitrile gloves.
f. Liberally apply LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up around the perimeter of the spill and then work it toward the centre. Continue to apply until there is no free liquid or liquid migration. Take care not to create aerosols. Ensure you use spark proof clean-up equipment if flammable liquids are involved.
g. Using a suitable broom or scraper work LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up into the spill by pushing loose absorbent in downward motion. Start moving LSM 43 back from the outside to the centre. If liquid can be seen move absorbent back over the liquid and work in further.
h. Repeat the previous procedure until the spill comes away from the surface bound within the absorbent. More viscous spills may require more vigorous action.
i. Sweep or scrape absorbed LSM Spill Control Bio-Hazard Clean-Up into a suitable scoop or dustpan
